Course information

The LLM programme is an academically rigorous programme, grounded in Oxford Brookes's long history of delivering law conversion courses, which also provides exceptional access to career focused extra-curricular activities. As well as studying the foundation subjects needed for a career in the law, you also have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation, enabling you to develop specialist knowledge in an area of your choice, supervised by one of our expert academics.

The Law School has a record outstanding student achievement, and has seen consistently stellar successes in external mooting and client interviewing competitions. Our teaching team includes both academic staff with internationally recognised research expertise and qualified practitioners. This ensures that students are taught by lawyers who have a deep understanding of the subject area as well as those with close links to the profession. You’ll have access to an excellent range of employability and established pro bono opportunities, including law clinics, work experience placements, solicitor and barrister mentoring schemes, and many other opportunities.

  • LawID co-curricular programme: This is a programme of activities designed to supplement your academic studies, and to help prepare you for a career in the legal professions. This includes: a weekly LawIDeas newsletter; the annual Brookes Law Fair; mentoring programmes for future solicitors and barristers; legal clinics; work experience and internships; regular speakers from the legal profession and related sectors; careers training sessions; and much more.
  • Mooting and client interviewing success: Oxford Brookes Law School has an exceptional track record of success in mooting and client interviewing competitions.
  • Teaching staff: Oxford Brookes Law School has a combination of research active lecturers and former legal practitioners, who can provide students with both a deep conceptual understanding of the law but also the skills needed for legal practice.
  • Location: The School of Law is located on Oxford Brookes University's state of the art Headington campus in the historic city of Oxford.
  • Learning: As well as covers the foundation subjects needed to underpin a career in the law, the LLM at Oxford Brookes incorporates specific sessions on legal careers and technology, and gives students the opportunity to undertake a practice-focused module focusing on litigation processes. We teach you via a combination of weekly lectures and workshops, to ensure you have significant opportunities to engage with and develop a detailed understanding of the foundations of legal knowledge and the ability to apply these in practice.
  • Dissertation: In addition to the foundational legal subjects, on the LLM you will receive advanced legal research training, and undertake a dissertation which enables you to develop specialist knowledge in an area of you choice.
  • Assessment: Assessments are spread throughout the year so that students are able to build on regular feedback rather than being required to sit all their exams at the end of the year.
  • Part-time students: have timetabled teaching generally on no more than two fixed days each week across both years, and are fully integrated into the full-time programme.
