& related policies

In this section you will find various links to application forms and related policies that you may need during your time on the ACL Training programme. The policies form part of the overall ACLT regulations but are presented here for ease of access to current students.

Please note that, as of 1 June 2022, LawCAB at aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk is managing all administration processes for ACL Training including those formerly undertaken by the ACL Office and ACL Head of Operations on behalf of ACLT. Please do not send emails to any email addresses other than aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk.  Please do not send any documentation by post to ACL or ACLT offices regarding the ACL Training course you are on - all documentation for ACL Training must now be sent via email attachment to aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk

Apply for an extension to an assessment deadline

Access full policy

Overview (extract from ACLT Extensions & Deferrals policy AC8)

If you are unable to submit coursework by the specified date because of extenuating circumstances, you should email aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk before the deadline date to request an extension. Requests submitted after the due date will not normally be accepted.

When emailing you must mark the email “Urgent: from [your name]: Extension Request”.

All applications for an extension to the coursework deadline must be submitted in writing using the Extension/Deferral Application form - see link above or access it via the OLE.

Supporting third-party evidence must be provided at the time of application.

You must lodge the application form by emailing aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk and not with individual tutors.

The application will be considered and you will be notified by email (normally within 48 hours) of the outcome.

If the request is approved, you will be given a new submission date. Providing you hand in your assignment on or before the extension submission date, you will receive marks for the work as if it were submitted on time.

Work submitted after the extension hand-in date will receive a mark of 0% and will make you eligible for a resit.  Read full policy.

Apply for a deferral of an assessment/exam

Access application form

Access full policy

Overview (extract from ACLT Extensions & Deferrals policy AC8)

The deferral procedure is not an appropriate measure in respect of permanent or long-term conditions or situations. If you are experiencing special long term difficulties arising from changes in your personal, medical or work circumstances you may apply, or be advised, to interrupt your studies for up to 12 consecutive months. See Postponement of studies.

If you want to request deferral of assessments you should discuss the matter, at the time, via email to aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk so that the extenuating circumstances and consequences of deferral can be fully considered.

When emailing email aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk you must mark the email “Urgent: from [your name]: Deferral Request”.

All applications for deferral of assessment must be made in writing, before the due date of the assessed activity, using the Extension/Deferral Application form - see link above, or it is also available via the OLE.

In exceptional circumstances, such as on the day of an examination, you may contact email aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk if you are prevented from attending due circumstances such as an accident or personal injury.

In such cases a form will be completed on your behalf but you will be required to provide independent evidence as soon as possible after the incident.

Requests for deferrals should always be made as close as possible to the time of the circumstances described and before the date of the assessment. Applications made after this period will not be accepted, except where you can show (as supported by third-party evidence) that extremely serious circumstances beyond your control prevented you from
contacting ACLT in this period.

Where more than one assessment is affected, the submission must be made before the first assessment. Your request must clearly state the dates when your circumstances occurred and which assessments are affected.

The application form asks you to describe the extenuating circumstances and how they have or would impair your performance in the assessment.

The form MUST be fully completed and include all relevant facts at the time of application. (Please see the full policy for further details.)

Supporting third party evidence must be attached to the form. (Please see the full policy for further details.)

You will have 7 days from the point of application to submit your third party evidence.

Your completed deferral application form, together with supporting third party evidence, should be submitted by email to aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk before the assessment date.

If your application for deferral is accepted this will be confirmed to you by email by the ACLT team who will notify you of the assessment(s) that are deferred and the date(s) by which you must attempt the assessment again. You will be required to retake the assessment “at the next opportunity‟.

If your application is refused you must attempt the assessment otherwise an absence will be recorded and you will forfeit your right to a resit, and may jeopardise your place on the course.

If extenuating circumstances affect a further assessment opportunity (e.g. at the special resit time), you must make another submission for the period concerned. This could simply confirm that your earlier circumstances have continued, but it must be accompanied by new third party evidence covering the new period. Read full policy

Apply for a concession after an assessment or exam

Access application form

Access full policy

Overview (extract from ACLT Extensions & Deferrals policy AC8)

The application for a concession must be made in writing and submitted by email to aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk no later than 10 working days after the assessment was due or you sat the examination.

You are required to provide objective evidence of the circumstances which you consider to have affected your performance. You should aim to collect any medical or other evidence either on the day itself or as close to as possible to the examination or assessment date.

ACLT will then determine if a concession should be granted.

Please note that Concessions are subject to the following caveats:

  • The granting of a concession will not automatically result in any increase in the marks.
  • Where you could have been reasonably expected to apply for an extension or deferral, an application for concession will not usually be granted.
  • Pre-existing or chronic medical conditions are not usually considered as valid mitigating circumstances in themselves since these are known of beforehand and can be addressed by means of a Learning Support Agreement or special arrangements including enhanced pastoral support. The onus is on students to disclose in advance of examinations or assessments any ongoing conditions they feel may impact on their performance and take the appropriate course of action to address the situation. Read full policy

Apply for a postponement/interruption of studies

Access application form

Access full policy

Overview (extract from ACLT Refund & Withdrawal policy GR5)

Students who postpone their studies with ACLT are, by definition, expected to return.

Refunds will not be issued for postponements and any resulting fee credit will remain on account and be carried forward to the following year to count towards further fees charged.

Upon enrolment the following year, the student will then be expected to pay the fees at the fee rate applicable to that year of study. If the student returns for the full academic year, they will be charged in full at the new rate. Any fee credit carried forward from the previous year will be used as a discount to reduce the fee liability.

Where a student postpones part way through a module and returns to study the following year to study the same module again, the student will be charged in full for the module. Students will not be charged again for any modules that they have paid for the previous academic year but not commenced studying towards at the point of postponement. Students will also be charged for additional modules attempted in the return year of study.

Before returning to the course, it is the student’s responsibility to make the necessary arrangements with ACLT at LawCAB including confirming their intended return date and module selection. ACLT will then ensure that the correct fee is charged for the student when returning to study.

Students who postpone/interrupt their studies remain liable to pay any outstanding fees due to ACLT (see full policy) and re-enrolment will not be permitted until outstanding fees have been paid.

In addition to the mechanism for fee refunds set out in the full policy, consideration shall be given to making substantial refunds to students who have to withdraw due to exceptional mitigating circumstances. ACLT shall consider each case on merit, however, please be aware that academic and financial difficulties are not normally regarded as acceptable reasons for any refund. Such cases must be submitted to the Head of Education.

Retrospective withdrawals/postponements shall not be permitted. Should there be exceptional mitigating circumstances which meant it was not possible to notify ACLT at the correct time, please refer to the full policy. Read full policy

Overview (extract from ACLT Refund & Withdrawal policy GR5)

Students who completely withdraw from the course are not expected to return to their course and shall receive a refund as set out in the full policy.

ACLT’s admissions process is subject to the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Once you have accepted the offer of a place on an ACLT course and you receive the invoice for the forthcoming academic year you have the right to cancel your acceptance by informing ACLT by email to aclt@lawcabs.ac.uk in writing within 14 calendar days after receipt of the invoice. If you cancel within this period you will be entitled to a refund of any deposit/fees which you have paid. If you cancel after this period ACLT retains the right to charge a proportion of the annual course fee as indicated in the full policy.
